The bank was chartered in 1814 and survived several wars and financial panics to become the Montgomery National Bank of Norristown in 1865. This note is always popular and in high demand, with Union Colonel Schall, and Generals Slemmer, Hancock, and Hartranft appearing on it. All four of these officers had ties to Norristown, having been educated, lived, or buried there. General Slemmerhas been erroneously identified as "Clemmer" for a number of years.
